Rechelbacher celebrates
50 years in beauty industry
MINNEAPOLIS -- Horst M. Rechelbacher, an active environmentalist and innovative business
leader, is celebrating his 50th year in the beauty business. As the founder of the
Aveda® Corporation and Intelligent Nutrients®, Horst has dedicated himself
to making people healthier and more beautiful, both inside and out.
"It is indeed a pleasure to know that my 50 years experience in the beauty and
cosmetic industry has provided the greatest opportunity for me to learn and to be
integrated in service towards the betterment of humans and the planet," Rechelbacher
said. "And yet, everyday is a new beginning and a chance to reinvent one's self."
Born in Austria, Horst is the son of an herbalist and naturalist. He began a three-year
apprenticeship in the beauty and salon industry at the age of 14. Since the mid 1960s,
he has specialized in analyzing the chemical constitution of plants while also pioneering
the practical use of flower and plant-based flavor-aromatherapy. In 1978, Rechelbacher
founded Aveda, a global plant-based cosmetic company, which he sold to Estee Lauder,
Inc. in 1997. Horst now owns Intelligent Nutrients®, a biodynamic and organically
based provider of functional foods and nutraceuticals. He also owns HMR Enterprises,
specializing in film, art and antiques from around the world.
Rechelbacher was voted by the Austrian press, along with Arnold Schwarzenegger and
Wolfgang Puck, as one of the most notable Austrians living in America. In 2004, Rechelbacher
was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Beauty Industry.
Vanity Fair Magazine recognized him as one of the most influential environmentalist
stewards in its 2005 "Best of Best" issue. He is also an advisor and supporter
of the United Plant Savers and the Cancer Prevention Coalition. In addition, he is
founder and chair of the Horst M. Rechelbacher Foundation, a philanthropic organization
dedicated to social and environmental preservation projects that operate on a grass-roots
level. Horst is one of the three original founders of BSR, Business for Social Responsibility,
which illustrates his belief that business has not only the responsibility but also
the great opportunity to provide sustainability to all living species.
Rechelbacher has authored two books, Rejuvenation and Aveda Rituals, and he is working
on a new book, The Business of Being Inspiring and Practical. His books discuss the
interconnectedness of all domains: of health and beauty; of mind, body, and spirit;
and of our bodies and the larger body we must care for -- Earth. Rechelbacher lectures
internationally on topics ranging from socially responsible business, to the mutual
dependence of all beings and the petrochemical vs. plant-based society. He was the
executive producer of Hidden Medicine a film that premiered at the 1999 Sundance
Film Festival. In addition, Horst also specializes and teaches team and environmentally-
integrated business management.
He resides in Wisconsin and New York City. He continues to promote, through profit
and non-profit organizations alike, sustainable development and constructive environmental
practices. |
