HOURCAR debuts in Twin
Cities
ST. PAUL -- HOURCAR», the Twin Cities' first car-sharing program, is now accepting
applications for membership.
Car-sharing gives people the freedom to get around in a car, without the headaches
and expenses of car ownership. HOURCAR makes a fleet of cars available to Twin Cities
residents and businesses for hourly reservations. Members can go online or call to
reserve a car to run errands locally. Cars equipped with onboard computers record
the time and distance that a member drives, and he or she is billed at the end of
the month.
Car-sharing spreads the fixed costs of car ownership across several people, making
access to cars more affordable. Simultaneously, car-sharing makes plain the per-trip
costs of driving, which causes people to use transportation more efficiently.
The first six HOURCAR vehicles will be located in Uptown and Loring Park in Minneapolis,
and Lowertown in St. Paul. The HOURCAR fleet is comprised of 2005 Toyota Priuses,
gas-electric hybrids with excellent fuel economy and low emissions.
Applicants are screened for a clean driving history, agree to a set of Member rules,
and attend a new member orientation where they learn all of the how-to basics of
sharing cars. There is a one-time $150 application fee for individual members. Household
memberships are also available, with additional members joining for a reduced application
fee. Members may apply today and car-sharing operations will begin in June.
Applicants may apply online at www.HOURCAR.org. Visit the website for more information
on HOURCAR hub locations, member qualifications and other details.
Robert Bly in Wisconsin
LAKE NEBAGAMON, Wisc. -- Poet Robert Bly's 31st Conference on the Great Mother
and the New Father will take place May 28 through June 5 at Camp Nebagamon in the
village of Lake Nebagamon, Wisc. Robert Bly, the internationally known poet, author,
and translator, started the Great Mother Conference in 1975 to consider a wide variety
of mythological, poetic and fairy tale traditions. The theme for this year's conference
will center on "The Intelligence of the Heart." The featured teacher will
be Joseph Chilton Pearce, internationally known author of many books, most recently
The Biology of Transcendence.
In speaking about Pearce, Robert Bly commented that, "...over the years, Joseph
Chilton Pearce has become a warrior for the intelligence of the heart; he reminds
us that the heart has its own electromagnetic field that arches out and curves back
and, by this means, intersects with other hearts. The earth itself has an electromagnetic
field. Our heart with its field maintains a conversation with our brain and with
the universe itself. Poetry puts us into a field of this kind, as does great music,
art, and dancing. The heart has an intelligence that brings us closer to the wildness
of the universe in a way that the intellect alone cannot. His work helps parents
to recognize openings in the child's psyche."
In addition, the Conference will feature a diverse array of teachers, poets, storytellers,
musicians and artists of all types. Robert Bly will speak on a variety of subjects
and will read new poems, as well as translations of Mirabai and Hafiz. Author and
storyteller extraordinaire Gioia Timpanelli will do a full evening of stories. The
astute political writer Michael Ventura will engage with Robert Bly in a dialogue
about the current political situation. Caroline Casey, the visionary activist, astrologist
and radio talk show host, will comment on the daily situation. Psychologist and author
Ruth Bly will talk about The Biology of Transcendence as it relates to the conference.
Internationally acclaimed poet and translator Coleman Barks will read his poems and
translations of Rumi.
For a complete list of teachers, poets, and musicians at the conference, visit

Oil production & energy scarcity
Richard Heinberg, author of The Party's Over: Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial
Societies, and Powerdown: Options and Actions for a Post-Carbon World, will make
public presentations June 10-11 at two events in the Twin Cities:
´ Friday, June 10, 7 p.m., First Universalist Church, 3400 Dupont Ave. S., Minneapolis,
an event hosted by UU EcoMinds.
´ Saturday, June 11, 2 p.m., St. Anthony Park Library, 2245 Como Ave., St. Paul,
courtesy of Friends of the St. Paul Library and Micawber's Book. Store.
Heinberg will speak about "peak oil," the point at which oil production
reaches its peak, and what comes after that. What comes after is a diminishing supply
of oil. What comes after is a period of energy scarcity that lasts until viable alternatives
are identified and put in place.
Oil supply is having a hard time keeping up with demand. Spare capacity in worldwide
oil production is evaporating. Price spikes are coming faster, lasting longer, and
rippling deeper through the economy. It's not just the price of gasoline. Fruits
and vegetables transported by truck 1,500 miles from farms in Florida and California
increase in price. Airline tickets go up. Employers affected by higher energy prices
try to cut costs by laying off workers. The stock market gets jumpy about oil prices
as well. And economists talk about the prospect of slow growth.
Before arriving in Minnesota, he will be participating in the Fourth International
Workshop on Oil & Gas Depletion in Lisbon, Portugal, organized by the Association
for the Study of Peak Oil & Gas. He also will take part in Green City Visions:
Rebuilding the City to Save the Environment in Oakland, Calif. Heinberg is a member
of the Core Faculty of New College of California.
