The Nearness of You, by Nicole Henry [www.nicolehenry.com]
It's always refreshing to discover a new voice on the horizon of popular music. Vocalist
Nicole Henry provides that welcomed new voice, as she brings an inspired sense of
confidence, intimacy and nuance to her new jazz-infused CD The Nearness of You. Featuring
a well-chosen collection of ear-friendly standards, such as "Summertime,"
"Old Black Magic" and "Fly Me to the Moon," as well as creative
versions of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Imagine," Henry
and her extraordinary trio of musicians glide through these tunes with style and
grace, infusing new life and energy into well-traveled songs.
Additionally, Henry offers an impeccable version of "Get Here," a beautiful
song written by Brenda Russell (popularized in the early '90s by Oleta Adams) that
resonates again via a fresh interpretation and performance. Nicole Henry is indeed
a noteworthy new voice-a voice, deserving of discovery.
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, by U2 [www.u2.com]
Arguably U2's best and most honest CD in years, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is
supercharged with a renewed energy and passion that will bring back casual fans and
excite devotees. Catapulted by The Edge's fiery guitar work, How to Dismantle an
Atomic Bomb rocks with a welcomed sonic infusion similar to their earlier work on
The Joshua Tree and Boy, as well as later recordings such as Achtung Baby.
One of the CD's highlights is the infectious single "Vertigo" (showcased
in the iPod television commercials), which garnered U2 well-deserved Grammy Awards
for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. Additionally, the revealing "Sometimes
You Can't Make It on Your Own" is beautifully rendered by Bono. It is a touching
tribute to lead singer's late father, and it sensitively instills the power of poignancy.
The rest of the compelling songs are laced with daring, shimmering, pop-melodic hooks
that beg for repeated listens. Long heralded as one of the world's great rock bands,
U2 has done themselves and their fervent fans proud by delivering another illuminating
and exhilarating musical journey.
