2005 Split Rock Arts Program Offers Summer Workshops, Soirées

MINNEAPOLIS -- Breaking away from the demands of work, home and daily routines, adults across the country are registering their interest in workshops taught by the Split Rock Arts Program's renowned faculty of artists and writers.

The 2005 program offers 46 workshops and runs June 26 through August 6. Tuition starts at $545 for weeklong workshops and -- new this year -- three-day Split Rock Shorts are available for $365. Scholarships and academic credit are available.

The Split Rock Arts Program is centered on providing artists of all interests, backgrounds, and skill levels with a variety of approaches to art forms, media, and methods, so people may select workshops that are most appropriate to their needs and interests. "Split Rock prides itself on offering continuing education and university credit to people who regard art as their profession, as well as to a larger audience of amateur artists who are dedicated to strengthening their talents," says Anastasia Faunce, the program's associate director. "In either case, our participants feel invigorated by having the time and space to explore art without interruption, and energized by being part of the kind of supportive artists' community that Split Rock offers."

Split Rock's roster of workshops includes those led by such praised artists and writers as:

´ Twin Cities-based architect Gerald E. Allan, who teaches the acclaimed experiential workshop, "Creating Your Life."

´ Textile artist and designer Rebekah Younger of Woolwich, Maine, who teaches "Knitwear: Exploring Color and Design"

´ San Francisco resident and award-winning author and poet Kim Addonizio, offering her "flash fiction" workshop "The Short-Short Story"

´ Boston-based painter and professor Cristi Rinklin, who incorporates imagery derived from science and technology in her work, teaching "The Third Eye: Painting in a New Century"

´ Author, editor, teacher and D.C. resident Sara Mansfield Taber leading "Literary Journalism: Portraits of People and Place"

Those who cannot spare a week to take a workshop may experience the accomplishment, energy and talent of faculty members during Split Rock Soirées, a series of five lively evenings filled with readings and artists' talks, followed by meet-the-artists receptions. Split Rock Soirées will be held Tuesdays at 7 p.m. on the Twin Cities campus. Soirées on June 28 and July 12 will be held at the McNeal Hall Auditorium, St. Paul. Soirées on July 19, July 26 and August 2 will take place at Coffman Memorial Union, Minneapolis. Tickets for the general public will be available at the door for $7.
