Minnesota National Wildlife Refuge
"Prairie Passages
-- A Study of Light and Color," an exhibit of 40 impressionist plein-air paintings
by the award-winning Excelsior artist Mary Carroll Moore, are on display now through
May 15 at the Minnesota National Wildlife Refuge Visitor's Center, 3815 American
Blvd. E., in Bloomington near the airport.
A reception for the artist is from 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday, April 3. The visitor's center
is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
"Prairie Passages depicts my fascination with the way light moves across and
around the landscape of the Upper Midwest," says Moore, who teaches painting
in soft pastels at the Bloomington Art Center. "These are recent pieces done
in plein-air style (in nature rather than from photographs)."
This collection of paintings features prairies and wild waterways in Minnesota and
surrounding states. The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge is one of only
four urban wildlife refuges in the nation, a place where wild coyotes, bald eagles,
badgers, and beavers live next door to three million people.

Outsiders and Others
"Mind and Body," an exhibit that explores the mind/body connection, is
now on display through April 22 at Outsiders and Others, 1010 Park Ave. S., Minneapolis.
It features the self-taught work of Alexandra Alexander, Mary Margaret Holloway,
Gina Ruppert, Brenda Von Ahsen and Duane Wirth, who explore whether images of the
mind reveal the soul, how the philosophy of the mind is reflected in the body and
if medical images convey the subtle energy of the mind and body.
An artist panel will be from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at the gallery. Admission
is free. Gallery hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and
from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday, or by appointment.
Examples of the work include: Alexandra Alexander's exploration of "wrong beauty"
as she assembles and dresses dolls and believes they become real and are "given
a soul"; Faye Buffington-Howell's art that expresses her "conscious and
unconscious feelings" through metaphors, symbols and mandalas; Kate Hoff's prints
that use medical imagery from her diagnosis and recovery, and amplified images of
her brain that she says " couldn't be more personal, as the images represent
how self and the universe are inseparably intertwined."
Outsiders and Others gallery provides a rare opportunity for people to see self-taught
and non-traditional artwork. For more information, visit outsidersandothers.org. |
