Minneapolis-St. Paul
International Film Festival
The largest film event in the Upper Midwest and one of the three largest civic celebrations
on the Twin Cities' annual social calendar, the 23rd Annual Minneapolis-St. Paul
International Film Festival will host a record-breaking 160 films -- including 16
U.S. premiere titles and four world premieres -- from April 1-16, as Minnesotans
are invited to discover movies from more than 60 nations while celebrating the diversity
of the Twin Cities.
The full festival slate is available at www.mnfilmarts.org/mspiff2005. Sections will
include World Cinema, Non-Fiction, Emerging Filmmakers and Childish Film Festival
programs, as well as director-hosted retrospectives and gala screenings. In addition,
there will be a multi-film tribute to world-renowned French filmmaker Benoit Jacquot,
who will attend the event. Also scheduled to arrive is French maverick Olivier Assayas
(Irma Vep, demonlover), who will introduce his new film Clean, starring Maggie Cheung
and Nick Nolte, on April 11.
The festival is proud to host the world premieres of two Minnesota-shot features:
The Wild Condition, an experimental feature that combines improvisational drama,
home movie and nature film to tell the story of an old woman who domesticates a wolf;
and Two Harbors, a funny and haunting story about the odd-couple friendship of two
craft-sellers in central Minnesota. Three new local documentaries -- A Life Without
Pain, Moving in a Mirror, and From There to Here -- will be screened.
Also at the 2005 festival are: "Europe at 12," a collection of films addressing
the character of the 12-year-old European Union; an expanded Emerging Filmmakers'
Competition, to be rated by guest judges Christine Walker (producer, American Splendor),
Neal Block (Head of distribution, Palm Pictures), and Lois Vossen (Program Director,
Independent Lens, PBS); and the most comprehensive catalog of Scandinavian features
of any North American festival, with more than 18 films from Finland, Sweden, Norway,
Denmark and Iceland.
Further information on other titles, as well as the full program slate, can be found
at www.mnfilmarts.org/mspiff2005. |
