Astrology of the United
States for 2005
by Curtis Burns
The portents of the U.S. astrology for 2005 are challenging. We seem to be heading
into a difficult time, but there are just as many positive opportunities ahead for
us. Using the chart of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence (7-4-1776,
5:12 p.m., Philadelphia, PA), and using the chart's Moon as a point of reference,
you can track the planet positions to make some accurate predictions.
I use the ancient art of Vedic astrology (also called Jyotish) in my readings of
the planets, so what I say here may differ from what Western-style astrologers say.
Vedic astrology tends to focus more on life's practical side, whereas Western astrology
is thought to be more psychological. Vedic astrology also has a very strong and powerful
spiritual component. So while I strive to be as realistic and unbiased as possible
in my predictions, I can also see possibilities and positive developments for growth.
War drums beating
With the charts and astrological factors in force at this time in history, it is
difficult to not talk about war and similar world events. Recent articles I've published
about the astrology of George W. Bush and his administration bear this out. It could
be said these multiple references to war and aggression in the charts will reinforce
their actual manifestation, so let us be realistic, yet spiritual.
First, from mid-July 2005 to early February 2006, Mars will be spending an extraordinarily
long time in the sign of Aries. Aries and Mars both reinforce the idea of war and
aggressive actions. Concurrently Mars and Saturn, the two classical malefics ("bringers
of evil"), will be in aspect to each other. This combination portends harsh
experiences, pain and loss associated with warfare, among other things.
Amazingly, this astrological timetable corresponds with information leaked out in
the press by Scott Ritter that the Bush Administration is planning a pre-emptive
invasion of Iran starting in June 2005. The rational is that Iran is supposedly involved
with the production of nuclear weapons.
It could be argued that another war excursion is the last thing we need, what with
the potential crisis brewing with North Korea, no sign of immediate peace in Iraq,
an increasingly belligerent Russia and China, the plummeting U.S. dollar due to government
deficit spending, and economic problems at home. However, such facts seem irrelevant
in the face of the current war climate, considering Iran's reported plan to open
a Euro-based oil exchange as opposed to a dollar-based exchange, which would be a
major blow to major U.S. corporations.
Adding fuel to the fire is that as Mars and Saturn align, they will occupy areas
of the U.S. chart that indicate disputes and battles. These planets will also be
directly aspecting the U.S. natal Pluto, which will intensify the action all the
more.
Walking into Iran with guns blazing will not be as easy as it was in Iraq. Iran has
a full working military, including Sunburn and Exocet missiles, which in the past
have almost split battleships in half. The Iraq war could be considered to be a walk
in the park compared to a war with Iran.
True spiritual growth
Now on a more positive note, from late September 2005 to September 2006 the greater
benefic ("bringer of good fortune") Jupiter will be moving into the ninth
house from the U.S. Moon and the fifth house from its Sun. This configuration could
have the potential to brighten our outlooks and expectations and give the U.S. a
taste of true spiritual growth (as opposed to a provincial, biased and bigoted inflation
of ideas.)
From all types of spiritual, cultural, and philosophical movements, we probably will
be seeing manifestations of a true renaissance happening in our culture -- movies,
TV, music and art. Movies like Indigo could experience continued success and growth.
People will be more receptive to ancient truths as opposed to just believing things
because of tradition.
In early May, Saturn moves into the sixth house from the U.S. Moon and will begin
opposing Neptune in the sky. With this, there may be confusion about whom and what
is in control, along with deep-set aversions to finding out the truth in important
situations. Let it be said that individuals and entire national populations often
prefer to be hoodwinked, because they rather like their comfortable and familiar
fantasy worlds. Relentless Saturn, however, brings us face-to-face with our most
hardened propensities of truth-avoidance, especially as it comes in contact with
Neptune.
Many times the Saturn/Neptune "coming to reality" process involves suffering
and losses caused by our inconsistencies with our professed ethics and our deeds,
or lack of them. Do we live up to our religious beliefs and convictions? Do our actions
speak the same as our words?
Learning lessons
Whether public or private, the consequential pain from our failures of character
coming to light is very great, but often it is the only way to teach our souls a
lesson. And the lesson is: The attainment of our dreams requires sacrifice and some
hard work.
Easy ways to happiness -- charging up our credit cards, excesses in relationships
and sexuality, intoxicants -- can bankrupt us physically and spiritually. However,
commitment, perseverance and integrity can almost assure us real happiness and success
in our goals, relationships and personal development.
In the end, this chart tells us that challenges could continue to come at us hard
and fast. Life could get quite tense and negative things could break out, but already
we show real signs of spiritual good fortune and new directions in thought and culture
that will uplift us. Of course, the future is not fixed; it is fluid and yet to be
decided. Astrology points to possibilities and probable trends, but you have tremendous
power to leverage your own personal good to effect planetary change.
The key lies in the attitudes we sustain through the course of life's events and
what we strive to manifest. To make our world better, a total change of consciousness
does not have to occur in every single person. But a minority can become leavening
agents that will serve to rise the whole loaf of planetary consciousness.
