Minnesota Book Award
finalists announced;
new authors make up more than a quarter of the nominees
The Minnesota Humanities Commission is pleased to announce finalists for the 17th
Annual Minnesota Book Awards. The diverse list includes many names familiar to the
public and literary community, as well as 14 first-time authors or "New Voices."
Since 1988, more than 800 books have been finalists for the awards, which celebrate
and honor Minnesota's proud literary tradition.
Close to 300 books were submitted for consideration in the 2005 Minnesota Book Awards,
many by first-time authors. To be eligible, works must have been copyrighted in 2004
and created by a Minnesota author, editor, or artist. On Saturday, January 29, a
panel of selectors from across the state gathered in St. Paul to review entries for
each of the 13 categories, from which they chose the 52 finalists. The winners for
each category will be determined by a separate panel of volunteer judges. Finalists
for the Fine Press category will be announced on February 14.
Award recipients will be announced at the Minnesota Book Awards at 8 pm on April
16 at The Woman's Club of Minneapolis. More information on the Book Awards ceremony
can be found at www.minnesotahumanities.org
