Marc Ian Barasch in
Minnesota
Marc Barasch, an award-winning writer, editor and television producer and author
of the new Field Notes on the Compassionate Life: A Search for the Soul of Kindness
(Rodale, 2005), will present "Field Notes on the Compassionate Life" from
7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 23 at The Continuum Center, 2538 Hennepin Ave. S., in Uptown
Minneapolis (in the U.S. Bank mall).
The presentation is part of The Continuum Center's Spring/Summer 2005
Speaker Series: Exploring Consciousness, Human Capacity and the Interconnectedness
of Life. The cost is $25, or $20 for members of The Continuum Center.
The author also will sign books at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at Birchbark Books,
2115 W. 21st St., Minneapolis, and at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, at Bound to Be
Read, 870 Grand Ave., St. Paul.
Can tapping into one simple human trait, hard-wired into our nervous system and waiting
to be awakened, transform our lives and the world at-large? Through the multiple
lenses of psychology and biology, pop culture and theology, history and philosophy,
Barasch weaves a stirring account of his search to find within himself and others
the ability to live compassionately. Drawing from disparate influences ranging from
Buddhist monks to skeptical neuroscientists, Barasch creates a riveting argument
that this shift in consciousness can change our psyches, relationships, health and
the earth.
Barasch has been an editor at Psychology Today, Natural Health and New Age Journal
(where his emphasis on leading-edge coverage of political and cultural issues won
a National Magazine Award). His last book, Healing Dreams, was hailed by the Washington
Post as "lucid, courageous, trailblazing" and won the Nautilus Award for
Best Psychology title. As a hobby, he plays and records with the rock band The Rock
Bottom Remainders (whose members include Stephen King, Amy Tan and Mitch Albom) and
Interview magazine called him "one of today's coolest grown-ups."
The Minnesota event is co-sponsored by Horst M. Rechelbacher Foundation, St. Joan
of Arc Church, The Marsh, French Meadow Bakery, Pathways and Abbott Northwestern
Hospital Institute for Health and Healing, with assistance by the Gegax Family Foundation,
Bruce Goodman and Bill Mateikis. For more information, visit www.continuumcenter.net
