Great River T'ai Chi Celebrates 25th Anniversary

MINNEAPOLIS -- Every morning, rain or shine, millions of people in China show up in the parks to practice t'ai chi, one of the world's most beneficial forms of exercise. Young and old alike practice t'ai chi for health, relaxation, as a "moving meditation," and as a gentle martial art. In America, t'ai chi has caught on since its introduction in the 1960s to the general public. Classes are now found all around the country even in the smallest towns.

"Americans are searching for ways to slow down, relax, and get healthy" says Barbara Davis, director of the 25-year-old Great River T'ai Chi studio and editor of Taijiquan Journal, a Minneapolis-based international t'ai chi magazine now in its fifth year. "T'ai Chi is unique in that it gives students practical health and relaxation benefits at the same time that it teaches principles of movement and martial arts application."

Locally, Great River T'ai Chi is one of the oldest studios in the area, having offered classes since 1979. "When we started, no one knew what t'ai chi was," Davis says. "Now, with movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero, and with the upcoming Beijing Olympics, a lot of attention is being focused on the traditional Chinese arts."

Great River will celebrate its 25th anniversary on February 13 with an open house, demonstrations, free sampler classes and refreshments. The event will be from 3-6 p.m. at the Great River studio, 1940 Hennepin Ave. S. (at Franklin).

"T'ai chi skills can be used both inside and outside of the classroom," says Cheryl Powers, associated director of Great River. "They can be incorporated into daily activities in order to help reduce stress and improve health." T'ai chi practice helps to lower blood pressure, increase mobility, and improve balance as demonstrated in numerous studies. It was featured recently in Time Magazine.

Davis and Powers have studied t'ai chi ch'uan (also spelled "taijiquan") in Taiwan and the United States, and have taught t'ai chi at the University of Minnesota, Macalester College and other venues. Davis has given t'ai chi workshops nationwide and is editor of Taijiquan Journal, which was nominated for an Utne Reader Award. Her newly released book, The Taijiquan Classics: An Annotated Translation (North Atlantic Books, 2004) takes an in-depth look at the history of t'ai chi and its literary tradition. Powers serves on the advisory board of, and is a regular columnist for Taijiquan Journal.

Enlightened Intelligence workshop

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Best-selling author Lori Prokop is hosting a free workshop "Enlightened Intelligence: Why Psychic and Spiritual Abilities Matter More Than IQ" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 at Prime Hotel (formerly the Wyndham) at 4460 W. 78th St. Circle (I-494 & France) in Bloomington.

"After testing dozens of executives, science has proven successful people have significant psychic abilities. The more successful, in terms of income and profits, the more powerful their psychic skills proved to be," Prokop said, based on scientific research conducted by Harvard, Princeton, other universities and Fortune 500 companies.

"Many an envious businessperson has suspected that his or her more successful competitors are gifted with a sixth sense. Now there is evidence that suggests intuition really does pay off," Time magazine reported on the research.

In the free four-hour workshop participants will learn how to quickly receive accurate answers and guidance to important life questions, how to remember life purpose and know the exact steps for success and how to bypass closed doors to find needed resources -- from money to time to others who do a great job helping you.
