Do You Feel a Draft? Counselor
training and public talk coming to Madison
MADISON ø Madison Quakers and other area peace groups are offering two events related
to conscientious objection and military service. On October 15, there will be a free
public presentation about the draft, conscientious objection and militarism in our
schools. On October 16, a one-day training for volunteer Draft Counselors will be
offered.
Some people have religious and moral convictions that lead them to regard war, military
service and Selective Service registration as unacceptable. Many people believe that
loving our neighbors, and even our enemies, is a principle incompatible with a military
approach to conflict. Still others hold that, in practical terms, fighting wars cannot
ever bring about lasting peace.
J.E. McNeil, an attorney from the Center on Conscience and War who has a 20-year
history in the peace movement, will be the speaker at the free public presentation,
at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at Madison Friends Meetinghouse, 1704 Roberts Court,
Madison (near Camp Randall). She will discuss militarism in our schools, how to opt
out of information-sharing requirements, how to determine if you are a conscientious
objector, and how to document your beliefs for the Selective Service.
Ms. McNeil has contributed legal briefs and has represented conscientious objectors,
military tax resistors and demonstrators in many court cases. She is executive director
of the Center on Conscience and War (CCW), in Washington, D.C. CCW was formed in
1940 by an association of religious bodies. Working to defend and extend the rights
of conscientious objectors, CCW supports all those who question participation in
war. For more information on CCW, please see www.nisbco.org
A Draft Counselor Training workshop also will be offered, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Madison Friends Meeting House, 1704 Roberts Court, Madison.
The cost is $40. Ms. McNeil will facilitate this intensive training for prospective
Draft Counselors who will provide conscientious objector counseling to young people
of registration age. Draft Counselors will then be available to speak to schools
and community organizations upon request. Attending the Friday night presentation
is a pre-requisite for the training.
