Yoga Awareness Weekend to Benefit KC Firefighters
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A number of Kansas City area yoga studios and established yoga teachers have come together to form the Kansas City Yoga Coalition. The group's mission is to promote yoga in the community and raise money for charitable causes.

The coalition's first event, "Yoga Awareness Weekend," will be Jan. 2-4, 2004. Each participating studio/teacher will hold a class or classes designed to introduce yoga to the public as a means of greater health and well-being. No previous yoga experience is required to participate. Cost of the class will be $10.

All the proceeds collected will go to the Greater Kansas City Last Alarm, a charitable fund that assists families of firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

While many yoga studios and teachers have raised monies for charities before, this is the first jointly held event. Most people are aware of yoga as a physical exercise, but few people are aware that part of the practice of yoga involves service to others. The coalition hopes that whether people practice yoga or not, they may be inspired to become more involved in helping their communities. Those interested in attending a benefit class may visit www.YogaKC.com for a list of participating yoga studios and be linked to their websites.
