Original music workshop & concert
The R. Carlos Nakai Quartet (RCNQ) will appear in Madison, Wisc., May 14-15 for a rare workshop and concert. The workshop, on the "the roots and creation of 'Original' Music," will be from 7-10 p.m. on May 14 at the Sheraton Hotel and a concert performance will be at 7:30 p.m. on May 15 at the Masonic Center. The events are sponsored by Tri-Unity Wellife Associates.

The Nakai Quartet consists of: Will Clipman, percussion; Amo Chip Dabney, sax reeds, bass and keyboards; Mary Redhouse, bass and keyboard; and R. Carlos Nakai on a variety of flutes and eagle whistle.

Performing original tunes in contemporary ethnic world fusion called NavaJazz, the RCNQ blends ancient timbres of indigenous flute, pan-global percussion and the human voice with modern textures and urban rhythms perfect for both intimate listening, exuberant dancing, trance-inducing grooves and inspirational melodies that continue to be appreciated by audiences and audiophiles from coast to coast.

Luzclara's workshop & healing
Internationally known and loved, Chilean ceremonial leader Luzclara is coming to Southwest Wisconsin to offer a workshop and ceremonial group healing on June 20-22 at St. Benedict's Center in Madison.

Luzclara is a Medicine Woman who draws from her experience over the last 30 years with many indigenous spiritual traditions. She has been working to awaken the sacred feminine energies in the planet using ancient methods of ritual and magic. She is a ritual dancer, shamanic practitioner and sound healer.

Weaving a spiritual synthesis from the rainbow strands of ancient and modern beliefs and practice, using meditation, breathing, sound, dance, chanting and drumming, a sacred space is created where the beauty and power in every individual can shine.

Summer Meditation Retreat
The DeKoven Center -- A Place Apart to Refresh Body, Mind & Spirit, a retreat and conference center located on a 20-acre wooded campus on the shores of Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Chicago, sponsors a broad range of retreats, conferences, and gym and pool programs for body, mind, and spirit.

DeKoven will host its Summer Meditation Intensive Retreat July 11-13. It will include p
eriods of silent meditation, with sitting, breathing, and meditation instruction by Raj Alwa of Sai Clinic in Lake Geneva; simple dance-movement meditations led by the Sisters of St. Mary; and time for spiritual conversation with the Rev. Travis Du Priest, director of DeKoven, by appointment. Massages also available by individual appointment. Registration is $165, with $50 deposit required.

As a community of communities on an historic and sacred campus, The DeKoven Center searches for and seeks to raise consciousness in a variety of ways, being home to Taylor Hall Ecumenical Retreat and Conference Center, the Original Root Zen Meditation Center, Spectrum School of the Arts, Kindermusic and New Covenant Church. The facilities, which once housed historic Racine College, also include several meditation gardens, an English cottage-style garden, a Williamsburg-style herb garden, a rock garden, and beautiful grounds within the enclosed historic quadrangle.

Shamanic gathering
The third-annual Midwest Shamanic Gathering, River of Islands, will involve participants in ceremony and in celebration of life August 29-September 1 at Bethel Horizons Retreat Center, located about 1 hour southwest of Madison in Dodgeville, Wisc., adjacent to Governor Dodge State Park. This year's theme is "Earth Dance with Spirit."

The event is sponsored by Pachamama, Inc., a non-profit organization created to support a Shamanic community and to provide training, ritual and ceremony, as well as sacred space to explore spiritual healing.

The registration fee, covering workshops, food and lodging, is $175 before June 30, $200 between July 1 and August 8, and $225 after August 8. The fee for children 14 and under is $75.
