Ancient African Wisdom about Healing Relationships
"There is a deep longing among people in the West to connect
with something bigger -- with community
and with spirit. People know there is something missing in their
lives, and I believe that the rituals and ancient ways of the village
offer some answers."
These are the thoughts of Sobonfu Somé, who left her home
in West Africa in 1992 to share her tribe's wisdom throughout the
U.S. and around the world. A renowned and respected mentor to thousands,
Sobonfu is one of the first and foremost voices of indigenous African
Spirituality
to come to the West. She is the author of three remarkable books
Welcoming Spirit Home: Ancient Teachings to Celebrate Children and
Community,
The Spirit of Intimacy: Ancient Teachings in the Ways of Relationships
and Falling Out of Grace: What We Learn from Life's Challenges.
She will share her story and lead an African drumming, chanting and dancing circle
at the Unity Church of Lawrence at 7 p.m.. Friday, May 9. The event is free to the
public and a love offering will be accepted. On May 10, Sobonfu will share some of
her tribe's powerful tools for healing relationships in a daylong workshop at The
Light Center, a holistic healing center near Baldwin, Kan. For details, call (785)
255-4583.
Sobonfu and her husband, Malidoma Somé, are from the Dagara tribe in Burkina
Faso. Their tribe sent them to bring the rituals and traditions of their people to
other cultures.
The Dagara people believe in the healing power of each individual, and they practice
rituals daily to remain clear and balanced in life. Rituals are the Dagara's way
of releasing tension and restoring continuity in their relationships. Sobonfu shares
how using rituals daily helps her maintain a strong inner peace through a strong
connection with the earth. It is her passion to keep the wisdom of her ancestors
alive and help others awaken to the voice of the spirit within.
She challenges us to be open to our own essential need for ritual and to deeply explore
the true purpose and role of each individual in this life.

A Rite of Initiation. A Spirit Journey. A Sacred Reawakening of the Feminine
The Gift -- A Woman's Rite to HerSelf is an extraordinarily powerful journey into
Ritual or Sacred Space where a remembrance and embodiment of a woman's true nature
is evoked. The three days of The Gift are offered for as many as 21 women. Much is
based around the circle, a sacred form where there is intrinsic equality of all beings
-- a unique weaving of precious individuals.
The date for the first GIFT weekend in Kansas City is June 6-8.
There are no teachers or therapists "telling you how it is," but the Shematrix
guides are present to hold each woman in absolute respect for her individuality and
to ensure her psychic safety to dive as deeply into her truth as she is ready.
The collective of women known as Shematrix was birthed in Byron Bay, Australia, in
1996 and now has many members throughout Australia and the USA. It presents The Gift
worldwide. Its vision is to ignite global awareness of the mysterious interconnectedness
of all life, and to cherish each individual as a gateway to infinite possibility.

Sunset Spiritualist Church and Camp
Tents pitched, trains unloading hundreds of people in a circus-like atmosphere...this
was the scene 69 years ago at the first Sunset Spiritualist Camp. Things have changed
since that first camp so many years ago, but the goal is the same: to provide education,
in the form of classes free to the public on a variety of subjects, ranging from
interpreting dreams and building medicine wheels to how color effects the body.
Sunset Spiritualist Church and Camp is located in Wells, Kan., about 25 miles north
of Salina. Camp dates are June 7-22.
The camp experience also includes a variety of readers, (example: past life regressions,
psychic readers, aura scans) bodyworkers (variety of massage techniques), and specialty
workers (example: energy workers, crystal readings) at reasonable rates to help people
further understanding the philosophy of Spiritualism.
The tents are no longer necessary. The facility includes a church, cabins, camper
hookups and restroom facilities. Three home-cooked meals are served daily.

annual woman's gathering and a Tarot Intensive. All events and retreats include excellent
meals, great coffee, homemade desserts, shared housing, inside and outside meeting
areas, fire circles and drumming circles.
• Lunacy Women's Week: Come Home to Yourself : July 5 - 12
This annual women's gathering is dedicated to personal transformation and honoring
the hero within each of us. The hero enters the labyrinth of her soul. She ventures
into the maze that holds the mysteries- the mysteries of human nature, self-discovery,
power gained and power denied. Within the maze, magic hides in secret places. It
waits for those who look deeply into the darkness; it waits for those who look deeply
into the light. Lunacy is filled with song, drum, moonlight, torchlight, ancient
dance, and timeless moments.
• Step into The Dream: The Tarot Intensive: August 2- 9
Pick up a Tarot deck; you hold a dream in your hands. Goddesses and Gods are there.
All of our human experiences are there. You hold 78 possibilities in your hand. Shuffle
the cards. All that has been, will be, or can be dance in your hands.
As you shuffle, lives are lived; fortunes are won and lost. Love is found; hearts
are broken. You know nothing of the shifting fates until.... You stop. The story
you now hold is your own. The next card will give you a glimpse into your future.
Look. It's The Magician. He beckons you. "Come," he says. "Revel in
the stories that the cards tell."
• Weekend Retreats include: Drum in the Summer Solstice, June 20 -22; Astrological
Polarities, August 15-17; Sacred Body, Sacred Self, Sept 12-14.
