Magic – a light in the darkness for the next Millennium
by Diana K. Turner

When life seems the darkest, it's then we need to understand, focus our attention and bring about the magic that's all around us. It's there, even though sometimes we can't feel it. The evidence of magic and miracles are literally everywhere. The coo of an innocent baby, the gentle fragrance of flowers, or the warmth of sunshine on a cold winter's day, are miracles we usually take for granted.

What we really want is the big magic. The news-breaking miracles like saving an infant from a well, the remarkable recovery of near-death accident or an unexpected sweepstakes check in the mail. What keeps this kind of magic from happening in our lives on a daily basis?

The invisible walls of defense, anger and fear can cripple our efforts in allowing magic to happen regularly in our lives. These negative emotions control and color the way we interpret the situations around us. They affect our attitude toward life. Removing the blinders of our negative attitudes, which create distortion, the whole panorama of magic can be seen. Miracles are the manifestation of magic.

Misinterpretations
Magic has been misinterpreted this last millennium, developing negative connotations and twisted for harmful purposes. During the Middle Ages, magic went underground and came out in the form of religious mysticism. Magic, taking cover to protect the knowledge of its power, was accepted in religious terms. Yet people feared the power of magic and used the name of God to rein terror on those who didn't comply with the status quo of that religiously fanatical period. The "Burning Times" are well remembered in our collective unconscious and the magic was suppressed. Power and potentiality cannot be contained and needing release and the magic of personal power came out in tortured ways.

Another form of magic that utilizes negative energy is associated with satanic ritualism. Oftentimes called black magic, in the last 100 years it has taken on a cultic, vicious and destructive form, giving the term "magic" a bad rap. The importance of understanding that what you give out comes back is the very basic form of magic. Anyone knowledgeable about the potency of any magic understands that where we place our attention and focus is very powerful. Realizing that what we focus on grows and what we resist persists is paramount in reinterpreting the meaning of magic.

Magic we need
The magic I am suggesting we need for the times ahead is healing, restorative and beneficial to us, our families, the community, and to the world for the balm it provides. This magic doesn't need an incantation or ceremonial ritual to become active. It comes from within. For centuries, the wisest of the wise have understood that this great power, which fuels the magic, is found by tapping into a deep source.

This power has been called by many names, described in a profusion of ways, yet in the simplest of terms can be described as love. This energy can be called on to create magic by "seeing the good" in our situations and relationships. Love's restorative effect allows us to change our perceptions and avoid judgment. Yet, how easy is it for us to pay attention to fear instead of focusing on love! This magic of love is available in an instant. Yet without cultivating and exercising the will to use this magic that comes from within, it can seem almost impossible to call it forth during times of necessity.

Why do we need magic in the next millennium? Much of the future is unknown. Many situations will be out of control unless we realize the part we play is very powerful even though it is simple. Suffering is caused by wanting control of others, situations, and events. Projection of our fears and the programming we received growing up color all of our perceptions of reality. Acting out from a place of fear and victimization just adds fuel to the escalating collective perception that things "out there" are out of our control. Magic is simply changing perspective by looking out at the world through a lens of love.

Receiving it
Calling upon love, receiving it into our very being, allows us to heal ourselves and then, in turn, offers healing to others. We can utilize magic to see the synchronicity in our lives in every miracle, big or small, that comes our way. Yet, to access that magic we must be courageous enough to face our hurt and woundedness inside. We must be willing to look at the areas of our minds and emotions that keep us locked into believing that we are victims of the past.

Calling upon the magic of love, by receiving and giving love unconditionally, makes miracles happen. Living in a world of miracles gives us hope. We are instruments of change by becoming the change we want to see happen. There is much to do and look forward to, living a full and joyous life now, despite what's going around outside of our control. Don't let yourself stay stuck in old patterns of defense and hurt.

The best magic we can offer each other is to become the change you want to see in the world by being love. The magic elixir of life is seeing the "good" in everything, every one and in all situations. Practice the magic of love today!
