Merlin, A Magician for All Seasons:
His 21st Century Connection
by Thomas G. Gulick

Merlin the Magician, counselor and friend to King Arthur in 5th or 6th century Britain, was (and is) far more than a fanciful legend. He was a prophet, an alchemist and a seer. What many today don't know is that Merlin played several more scenes on the world stage in several more incarnations. He is, in fact, very active in the 21st century as the ascended master, Saint Germain. And Saint Germain has, in turn, a very strong connection to America and to the spiritual quality of freedom, as we shall see.

Merlin performed what we could call alchemical magic back in the days of the Round Table. But he always had a deeper purpose in doing this than just to amuse or to entertain. He manifested the magical sword buried in the stone and anvil that only the true king, Arthur, was able to pull out, because of his non-attachment to temporal power. It was Merlin who saved Arthur's life when Arthur's sword broke in two in the famous fight with Lord Pellinore. Merlin "cast an enchantment" upon the mighty Pellinore. Merlin was with Arthur when the miraculous "lady of the lake" extended her hand from underwater holding the sword "Excalibur" with which Arthur would go forth to conquer. It was Merlin who advised Arthur to always wear the sheath of Excalibur and that by this talisman he would shed no blood in battle.

Merlin's spiritual and practical advice allowed Arthur to create the renowned idyllic kingdom of Camelot, until the destructive sorceresses and dark knights, such as his own bastard son, Modred, shattered the peace and Arthur died from battle wounds. Merlin, too, was betrayed by Vivien, his own student in the magical arts and with whom he had fallen in love. As the story goes, she locked him in a stone tomb using incantations he'd taught her and in this cave he perished.

Undaunted, Merlin's spirit continued his journey through many more incarnations. We know his story through his "messengers" in this age, the renowned American spiritual teachers, Elizabeth Clare Prophet and her husband, Mark L. Prophet. And what we learn about this amazing master magician, Merlin/Saint Germain is how, down through the ages, he worked to precipitate by the grace of God's spiritual magic or alchemy, the place, the culture, the circumstances, the "total feng shui" necessary, one might say, for the recreation of a great golden age of enlightenment. For this to happen, he realized that a society based on the principles of personal freedom and liberty had to be established on Earth. He resolved to embody that freedom time after time, life after life.

Here are a few of the famous later incarnations of Merlin, as recounted by Mrs. Prophet:

-- He was Roger Bacon, the famed 13th century monk-scientist who promoted the experimental method in science, who believed that the world was round, who predicted the invention of the hot-air balloon, a flying machine, spectacles, the telescope, microscope, elevator and mechanically powered ships and carriages -- all written about as though he had actually seen them; also he was the first Westerner to write down exact instructions for the making of gunpowder (a formula he kept secret lest it be misused).
-- He was Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), the intrepid explorer, discoverer of the New World, who said that he discovered America not by astronomy but through prophecy and a spiritual destiny foretold by John the Revelator and by Isaiah.
-- Saint Germain's last turn on the world stage was as Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626), one of the great minds of Western Civilization, father of inductive reasoning and the scientific method, giving birth eventually to the technology of today that freed mankind from the struggle for sheer survival and liberating the people of the 21st century to pursue higher consciousness. Bacon formed a group of literary geniuses (including Ben Jonson, Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh and George Herbert) who produced most of Elizabethan literature. Bacon also organized the translation of the King James Version of the Bible. His writings later inspired political thinkers like Hobbes, Bentham and John Locke who, in turn, influenced the thought of the founding fathers of America.

Bacon himself was one of the founding fathers of modern cryptology. In various cipher codes found in the works of both Bacon and Shakespeare are revealed his true-life story as the child of Queen Elizabeth, the rightful heir to the throne of England, a claim suppressed by his mother under pain of death. These ciphers also disclosed that Bacon was the real author of the Shakespearean plays, a point hotly debated in literary circles to this day.

In addition, Bacon played a role in the settling of the New World, convincing James I to charter Newfoundland. Likewise, he acted as an officer of the Virginia Company, which was behind the settlement of Jamestown, England's first permanent colony in the America. Bacon was the founder of Freemasonry, the goal of which was the freedom and enlightenment of mankind. All but three of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence were members of the Masonic order, as well as such key founding fathers as Washington, Hamilton, Madison, Hancock and Benjamin Franklin, inspired by the Masonic principles in the creation of the United States.

That land where freedom of thought and action was available to all was foretold in the treatise of Francis Bacon called The New Atlantis. It was manifested in the "New World" of America, through the Holy Alchemy of Saint Germain and his disciples of Freedom, both those disciples in embodiment and those in the upper octaves of light. This new world of freedom was perhaps the greatest magic of the master who once was Merlin.

Still as Saint Germain himself might say, all of this is still a "work in progress." Next stop for him and his disciples: a Golden Age Civilization of the Higher Mind and the Christ Consciousness!
