Reuniting With Your Dark Side
by Jubel Kincade

Before tackling the forces of evil in this world, one should come to terms with one's own dark side. The microcosm is a reflection of the macrocosm, and as many have been told -- as above, so below. So I believe the surest, and least hypocritical, approach is to look within first. Peace comes from within, not without.

I have not met a person yet who did have not have a darker side; however, some are more in tune with it than others. Many repress or hide their darker traits. I have found that this disrupts the harmony within and takes power away from the self. I am not advocating just letting things loose. I encourage a re-unification and transformation. I've done this many times in successively more encompassing ways. Start small; it is safer and less distressing to those who know you.

When you have some time to yourself, start looking within for your own dark side. Sometimes it is very ugly, but it is part of you. I would start with something repressed, something you split or pushed away from yourself. You could just visualize yourself looking until you find something. The important thing is that when you find something, try to sense its content...emotionally, mentally, etc. Try to figure out what it is that is repressed.

I would like to share what I have done to resolve at least part of my dark side. Even by taking this process very slowly, I have had startling effects. Familiarize yourself with this "dark self" or portion thereof that you found and basically invite it back into yourself. You may see yourself as whitish and the dark self as this blackish hazy figure, but when they both merge and unify, you will probably see yourself as a little dimmed. I am a more visual person, and this at least is how it appears to me.

Now, the danger of this technique is that you are basically inviting back a bad habit, an emotional problem, a mental problem or something else -- or even a combination of them. But remember, the reason that the dark self exists is because it is separate from you. The problem was never fixed, only pushed down and separated from you. In re-unifying with it, you will find you are little bit stronger. And once you deal with the problem and transmute the negative trait into a positive one, the overall harmony of yourself will improve. In the end, there will only be the self -- not two poles.

Now for the dangers and flaws of this technique. First of all, if you don't know how to take a bad trait and turn it into a good one -- i.e. turn impatience into patience as one example -- I do not recommend doing this technique. You will only release things upon yourself that you again can not deal with and it would be better to let it alone for now. If the piece is manageable, you will reach a new equilibrium in time, and so long as you continue to better yourself, you are only setting yourself back a little to deal with a problem that has not been resolved. But without knowing how to transmute a bad trait to good, there is the danger of taking too much and not being able to handle it. Basically, you change for the worse as a new equilibrium is reached.

Furthermore, I restate that it is wise to start with something small. Not only will you have to deal with the original problem again, but it will again influence your everyday life. I have bitten off more than I could chew once or twice, so I warn others against it. This technique, depending on how much you are inviting back, could cause emotional imbalance (more prone to outbursts of anger in my case), mental cloudiness and difficulty in focusing, etc. You could be affected at every level of your being. So not only would you have to transmute a bad trait to good, but also you must watch yourself during the day to make sure you don't shout at someone for something that would not normally upset you (for an example).

In accepting a piece of your darker nature and trying to unify with it to resolve it, you are disrupting the harmony you have without this piece to reach a new harmony with this piece. I generally just refer to this as the period of emotional instability after unification. However, if what you took back was more mental in nature, it would be mental instability.

In summary, slow and steady wins this race. Start by looking for a small piece of your dark side, the one that comes to you is probably all right. If you have to push or use a lot of effort to find it, you may not be ready for it. I have found that there is great value in re-unifying your dark side to your normal self, because both are you, and you should not have separated to begin with. Reaching a new level of wholeness and harmony is the objective and I hope what I write may help.
