Communiversity’s Wholistic Health
Fair
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Losing sleep in search of a guru? You won’t find one at Communiversity’s
Wholistic Health Fair. What you will find, according to attendee Reverend Scott Myers,
“are all kinds of people there who have brought their knowledge and resources of
mental, physical, emotional and spiritual healing.” What he walked away with was
not a quick fix, but resources to “find a path to healing myself.”
The alchemy between education and self-responsibility is part of what first inspired
the Wholistic Health Fair’s foundress, Jo Bonewits, to propose the Wholistic Health
Fair as a project for Communiversity 10 years ago.
“I wanted it to be a whole body experience: physical, emotional
and spiritual,” she says. “I wanted to give people in the community
an event where they could go and find out about holistic health
practices to better direct their own research and resources.”
Today, Jo Bonewits is the volunteer coordinator and floor manager at the Kansas City
Toy and Miniature Museum. She still attends the Communiversity Wholistic Health Fair
because she values “the scope of the program.”
“You can find everything from martial arts to psychic sciences,” she says, “and explore
them at little cost.”
Unlike other holistic health fairs – some of which resemble info-mercials
more than fairs – the Wholistic Health Fair does not limit itself
to advertising booths. The Wholistic Health Fair provides workshops
to participants at a nominal fee. The educational emphasis of the
Wholistic Health Fair has a strong basis in Communiver-sity – one
of the longest-running community
education outreaches in the country – and its interface with UMKC.
This dual commitment to quality community
education and self-responsibility is still at the heart of the Wholistic
Health Fair.
Rick Mareske, current director of the Communiversity program, says
the goal of the Wholistic Health Fair is “to provide the community
with a health fair that offers a solid educational component.”
“It brings together empowered teachers with people who are taking responsibility
for their own lives,” he says.
There is another aspect of the Wholistic Health Fair that brings people back every
year. “It’s fun!” says Jo Bonewits. “I’ve always enjoyed seeing people get excited
about new things.”
The opportunity to spend a day exploring holistic practices in an atmosphere that
Wholistic Health Fair volunteer coordinator Julie Hise describes as “full of movement
and color” has built up a steady constituency of attendees over the years.
“It’s a diverse group” says Charles Adriano about the Wholistic Health Fair. “There
is something for everybody interested in learning about healing.”
The Wholistic Health Fair will take place Sunday, March 24, from 11a.m. to 6 p.m.
in the University Center on the UMKC campus. Workshops are $2 each or $5 for unlimited
classes. Workshop space is limited, so register early. Entertainment and prizes available.
