2002: The Year Ahead
Astrology | by Cathy Zornes
Many of us are still trying to make sense of the September 11 catastrophe. Some of us are still wondering whether we should go back to our normal lives or if we will continue to live in fear. I think we will start this new year with a continued resolve to preserve our lifestyle and all that we hold dear.
Most of us practice a greater sense of awareness in our everyday lives, and hopefully we are all less naive. Some of us are less trusting, but we share a renewed sense of patriotism and confidence in our government and military. Yet, people continue to feel vulnerable, and there will be a strong desire to protect our economy.
On December 30, 2001, there was an eclipse in Cancer. An eclipse's effect is felt until the next eclipse, usually a period of about six months. During the next six months or so, we will begin the new year under its Cancer/Capricorn influence. Cancer represents our homes/homeland, a strong sensitivity and compassion, a heightening of our defenses, and a tendency to cling to that which we cherish. Capricorn is often associated with fear, facing cold, hard reality, those in authority and our government, laws and restrictions, as well as proceeding with caution and determination.
Worldly tensions
This year Saturn continues its transit through the sign of Gemini -- and as it did in 2001, and in May 2002, it forms another exact opposition aspect to Pluto at 16 degrees. This is a very stressful aspect, and I expect some of the tension associated with world events to continue for a good portion of this year.
Saturn will transit from 8 to 28 degrees of Gemini. This will strongly affect anyone with planets (specifically the Sun or Moon) in Gemini, Pisces, Virgo or Sagittarius, at those degrees. Things to watch for would be health issues, including stiffness in joints, knee problems, eye strain, anything that could be chronic in nature may flair up at this time. Saturn tends to crystallize and manifest things brought on by stress or strain. There may be necessary restructuring due to change that we have no control over.
Uranus winds up its transit in Aquarius, and anyone with planets in Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius in the 22 to 28 degree range will be most affected. Uranus can bring an unsettling energy, breaking up anything routine or mundane. Often there is a strong desire for freedom from restriction, which causes nervousness and anxiety. New energies should enter your life at this time. If you are not able to make adjustments in your life you may feel the negativity of this transit; often sudden, unexpected change will happen to you.
A dreamy state
This year, Neptune will transit between 7 and 10 degrees of Aquarius. Anyone who has planets in Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius at these degrees will be most affected. Things to watch for include feelings of disillusionment, confusion, a dreamy state of mind where you contemplate and envision what you would like to do but feel incapable of making any changes at this time. Enhanced creativity, heightened sensitivity, or even romantic illusion, are possible with this transit. Specifically, people near the age of 40-41 will be experiencing their first Neptune-square, and this can be a very perplexing time. Life may seem disorderly and chaotic at times. With Neptune, we experience transitions, and it helps to dissolve old things so new can enter, yet we often need strong faith and trust that we are heading in the right direction.
Pluto will continue its transit through the middle degrees of Sagittarius, from 15 to 18 degrees. Anyone with planets in Gemini, Pisces, Virgo and Sagittarius at those degrees may be greatly affected. Things to watch for include power struggles with others, resisting the need to make necessary changes in your life. Acquiring a greater sense of your own inner strengths will help you through this period.
The most significant aspects in the coming year include the final opposition of Saturn and Pluto in May 2002, a Mars/Jupiter conjunction in Cancer in June and July. I wouldn't be surprised if there were heavy warfare going on at that time. Saturn trines Uranus in August and September, and again in December. That is a helpful aspect for constructive change, restructuring of technology, and practical inventions. And Jupiter in Leo trines Pluto in Sagittarius in October, November and December -- hopefully, this aspect will help to bring a greater transformation and promote optimism and faith after destruction.
For those of you interested in the retrograde patterns this coming year, Mercury is retrograde January 18 through February 8, again from May 15 through June 8 and for the final time September 14 through October 6. Venus also has a retrograde period this year from October 10 through November 21.
